7 Ways to Make Your Home Feel Warmer Without Turning Up the Heat

by Vanna Deevanna

When temperatures start dropping in Alaska, it's tempting to keep reaching for the thermostat. But before turning up the heat, there are a few simple things you can do to make your home feel warmer and more comfortable.

From blocking cold drafts to making a few cozy design changes, these seven tips can help you stay comfortable while potentially keeping your heating costs down.

1. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Did you know your ceiling fan can actually help keep your home warmer?

During the colder months, switch your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise at a low speed. Since warm air naturally rises, this helps gently push the warm air near the ceiling back down into the room.

It's a simple adjustment that can make a difference, especially in rooms with high ceilings.

2. Add Thick Curtains to Your Windows

Windows can be a major source of heat loss, especially during an Alaska winter.

Consider adding thermal or insulated curtains to help reduce heat loss and block cold drafts. Keep them open during sunny daytime hours to let natural sunlight warm your space, then close them in the evening to help retain heat.

3. Find and Seal Those Sneaky Drafts

Sometimes the cold isn't coming from outside temperatures alone. It's coming through small gaps around doors, windows, outlets, and other openings.

Check for drafts around:

  • Exterior doors
  • Window frames
  • Baseboards
  • Electrical outlets on exterior walls
  • Garage entry doors

Weatherstripping and caulking are inexpensive ways to help seal unwanted air leaks.

4. Layer Your Floors with Area Rugs

Hardwood, tile, and laminate floors can feel especially cold during winter.

Adding area rugs, particularly in bedrooms, living rooms, and high-traffic areas, creates an extra layer between your feet and the cold floor. Rugs can also make a room feel warmer, softer, and more inviting.

5. Change Your Lighting

Lighting can completely change how a room feels.

Swap cool-toned light bulbs for warm white bulbs (around 2700K). Add table lamps, floor lamps, and soft accent lighting instead of relying entirely on bright overhead lights.

The result? A warmer, more comfortable atmosphere without changing the thermostat.

6. Keep Furniture Away from Heating Vents

Take a look at where your furniture is positioned.

Large couches, beds, and dressers can block heating vents and prevent warm air from circulating properly. Make sure your registers and return air vents aren't covered by furniture, rugs, or curtains.

Good airflow helps your heating system distribute warmth more evenly throughout your home.

7. Add Cozy Layers to Your Living Spaces

Sometimes making your home feel warmer is as simple as changing the little things.

Try adding:

  • Chunky knit blankets
  • Soft throw pillows
  • Flannel or fleece bedding
  • Heavier comforters
  • Warm-toned decorative accents

These small changes make your home feel more inviting, especially during those long Alaska winter evenings.

Bonus Tip: Don't Forget Your Heating System!

A comfortable home starts with a heating system that's working properly. Replace your furnace filter regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations, keep vents clear, and schedule routine maintenance.

If certain rooms are consistently colder than others, it may be worth having your insulation, ductwork, and heating system evaluated.

Stay Cozy This Alaska Winter!

You don't always have to turn up the thermostat to make your home feel warmer. A few small adjustments can help create a more comfortable space while potentially improving energy efficiency.

Whether you're settling in for another Alaska winter or getting your home ready for the colder months, a little preparation goes a long way.
