Moving in July? Here’s How to Protect Your Belongings from the Heat (Yes, Even in Alaska!)

When you think of Alaska, sweltering heat probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But during July, Anchorage and surrounding areas can experience warm sunny days that might surprise even longtime residents. If you’re planning a move during this time, it’s important to consider how heat can impact your belongings—yes, even here in the Last Frontier.
While our temperatures rarely reach the extremes of the Lower 48, vehicles, garages, and storage containers can still get quite warm, especially under direct sun. Here’s how to protect your possessions and ensure your move goes smoothly:
- Plan Around the Peak Heat - Try to schedule your move for the early morning or evening. The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and avoiding those hours can help prevent heat-related damage and make moving more comfortable for everyone involved.
- Protect Your Electronics - Laptops, televisions, tablets, and smart home devices are all sensitive to heat. When possible, transport them in a climate-controlled car instead of the back of a hot moving truck. Wrap them in anti-static bubble wrap and keep them off hot surfaces.
- Keep Candles and Toiletries Separate - Candles, soaps, lotions, and certain food items can melt or spoil when exposed to higher temperatures. Box these items separately and label them clearly. If you have a cooler, use it for toiletries or perishable goods.
- Use the Right Packing Materials - Avoid plastic wrap for long-term exposure; it can trap heat and moisture. Instead, use breathable packing materials like moving blankets, towels, and cotton sheets to protect furniture and delicate items.
- Shade and Ventilate - Park your moving truck or trailer in the shade while loading. Prop open doors when safe to allow ventilation. It may not make a huge difference in the outdoor temp, but every bit helps reduce internal heat buildup.
- Check Before You Unpack - Once you've arrived, check electronics and delicate items before plugging in or using them. Allow electronics to acclimate to room temperature if they feel warm.
Whether you're upgrading homes, PCS'ing, or just switching neighborhoods, being heat-aware during a July move in Alaska is a smart way to protect your investment and make settling in less stressful.
